Acts
The Nuclear Safety and Control Act came into force on May 31, 2000, when it replaced the Atomic Energy Control Act. It provides the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) with its regulatory authority.
The CNSC also:
- administers the Nuclear Liability Act
- conducts environmental assessments under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act
- implements Canada's bilateral agreement with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on nuclear safeguards verification
- has a duty to consult with Aboriginal peoples

Under the Nuclear Safety and Control Act, the Commission has put in place by-laws and regulations.

Proposed New Regulations or Amendments to Regulations
When required, the CNSC puts forward proposals for new regulations or proposed amendments to existing Regulations under the Nuclear Safety and Control Act.
- Amendments to Nuclear Non-proliferation Import and Export Control Regulations
- Amendment to Class II Nuclear Facilities and Prescribed Equipment Regulations
- Regulations Amending Certain Regulations made under the Nuclear Safety and Control Act (Miscellaneous Program)
- Amendments to the Packaging and Transport of Nuclear Substances Regulations
