CNSC's EVP, Ramzi Jammal, met with representatives from the Korean Women Journalists Association in Ottawa on May 7th. Mr. Jammal's presentation focused on CNSC regulatory actions since the March 2011 Fukushima event, the safety of CANDU reactors, radioactive waste management, the licensing process and communications.

Gordon White, Vice-President, Regulatory Affairs Branch delivered a presentation at the 2013 CAMPUT Conference "Serving the Public Interest: The Regulator's Balancing Act". Mr. White spoke about the perceptions of risk and the challenges of communicating nuclear issues to the public in his presentation entitled "Dealing with Headline-Grabbing Energy Issues: The Canadian nuclear regulator's approach to 'hot' topics."

Ramzi Jammal, Executive Vice-President and Chief Regulatory Operations Officer, accompanied by Dr. Patsy Thompson, Director General, Environmental and Radiation Protection and Assessment and François Rinfret, formerly with the Gentilly-2 Regulatory Program Division, made a presentation before the Quebec National Assembly Committee on Agriculture, Fisheries, Energy and Natural Resources. The presentation discusses the CNSC's role and responsibilities for the upcoming decommissioning of the Gentilly-2 nuclear power plant.

Dr. Greg Rzentkowski, Director General of the Directorate of Power Reactor Regulation at the CNSC, gave a presentation at the 34th annual conference of the Canadian Nuclear Society held in Toronto, Ontario. His talk focused on the application of probabilistic safety goals to Canadian nuclear power regulations, new builds and operating nuclear power plants as well as the long-term operation or refurbishment of operating nuclear power plants.

Jean-Claude Poirier, Senior Project Officer, Directorate of Regulatory Improvement and Major Project Management, gave a presentation to the Canadian Radiation Protection Association's Annual Conference. His talk provided an overview of the proposed Administrative Monetary Penalties Regulations. The event was held in Sherbrooke, Québec and was attended by radiation protection professionals from across Canada.

Barclay Howden, Director General, Directorate of Regulatory Improvement and Major Projects Management presented to the Canadian Nuclear Industry Leadership Program. His talk focused on the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission’s role in regulating the use of nuclear energy and materials to protect the health, safety and security of Canadians and the environment. The event was held at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario and was attended by emerging leaders in the Canadian nuclear industry.

Communications and Consultation – The Role of the CNSC (PDF)

Timothea Gibb, Director of Public Affairs and Media Relations and Aimee Rupert, Senior Communications Advisor gave a presentation at a Port Hope community liaison forum hosted by Cameco. The presentation focused on the CNSC's efforts to engage and communicate with Canadians about the role it plays in regulating nuclear facilities and discussed CNSC requirements for licensees’ public information and disclosure programs.

On May 12, 2013, Karen Owen-Whitred, Director of the International Safeguards Division, delivered a presentation on Canada's experience with safeguards to a conference of the North American Young Generation in Nuclear (NAYGN), in Washington, D.C. The NAYGN is a US-based professional society focused on providing professional development for its members (from Canada, the US, and Mexico) and sharing public information about the benefits obtained from peaceful use of nuclear science and technology.

Dr. Greg Rzentkowski, Director General of the Power Reactor Regulation at the CNSC, gave a presentation during a seminar lunch on the refurbishment and life extension of Ontario's nuclear power plants. His talk focused on the regulatory requirements related to refurbishment activities. The event was held in Toronto and was attended by a group of senior industry professionals, financiers, executives, regulators, stakeholders and policymakers.

Timothea Gibb, Director of Public Affairs and Media Relations, gave a presentation at the Technical Meeting on the draft General Safety Guide on Communication and Consultation with Interested Parties in Vienna, Austria. The presentation focused on the CNSC's mandate and legislative responsibilities, and described the Canadian regulator's commitment to transparency, consultation and safety, and its clear requirements for licensees and communications activities.

Dov ben-Reuven, Regulatory Policy Officer, Regulatory Policy Analysis Division, and Jean-Claude Poirier, Senior Project Officer, Internal Quality Management Division, accompanied by André Régimbald, Director General, Directorate of Nuclear Substances Regulation and Peter Fundarek, Director, Nuclear Substance and Radiation Devices Licensing Division, undertook a series of presentations to CNSC licensees across Canada on the proposed Administrative Monetary Penalties Regulations.

On February 27, 2013, Dr. Patsy Thompson delivered a presentation entitled "CNSC's Approach to Environmental Protection and Assessment" at the Canadian Nuclear Association Conference in Ottawa. In her presentation, Dr. Thompson outlined the new CNSC Environmental Protection Assessment and Environmental Assessment processes under the CEA Act, 2012 and the NSCA.
