CNSC announces decision on Canadian Light Source Inc.’s application for an amendment to authorize phase 3 Commissioning

2003-03

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 30, 2003

Following a public hearing on December 12, 2002, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) today announced its decision to amend the Particle Accelerator Operating Licence for Canadian Light Source Inc. (CLS), Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. The amendment authorizes CLS to commence the third and final stage of the commissioning of its electron synchrotron located at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon. The amended licence is valid until May 27, 2006.

Following completion of the commissioning activities, CLS will seek CNSC approval to commence normal operations. That application will be the subject of a future public hearing of the Commission.

During the public hearing, the Commission considered written material and presentations from CLS, and CNSC staff. There were no intervenors. The Commission concluded that CLS is qualified to carry on the activity that the licence amendment will authorize and, in doing so, will make adequate provision for the protection of the environment, the health and safety of persons, and the maintenance of national security and measures required to implement international obligations to which Canada has agreed.

Records of Proceedings, including the Reasons for Decisions and transcripts of the hearing are available on the CNSC web-site, or by contacting the CNSC.

The CNSC regulates the use of nuclear energy and materials to protect health, safety, security and the environment and to respect Canada's international commitments on the peaceful use of nuclear energy.
