Change in disposal of aqueous liquid waste
The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has authorized a change in operations at Shield Source Incorporated (SSI) in Peterborough, Ontario. The requested change involves a change in disposal of its aqueous liquid waste whereby the endpoint is now the municipal sewer system rather than a septic tank.
Prior to authorizing the disposal of aqueous liquid waste to the sewer, an EA was completed in compliance with the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act. The purpose of an EA is to identify the possible environmental effects of a proposed project, and to determine whether these effects can be mitigated before the project is allowed to proceed. The EA was completed on December 11, 2002, and concluded that no significant effects were likely.
CNSC maintains a public registry of documents related to its EAs. Lists and copies of documents may be obtained upon request. For questions or information directly related to the EA for this project, please contact:
For questions or information directly related to the environmental assessment of this project, contact the CNSC.
The CNSC regulates the use of nuclear energy and materials to protect health, safety, security and the environment, and to implement Canada's international commitments on the peaceful use of nuclear energy; and to disseminate objective scientific, technical and regulatory information to the public.
